Reading firefox's .desktop file /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop I believe this is needed:

X-Ayatana-Desktop-Shortcuts=NewWindow;
[NewWindow Shortcut Group]
Name=Open a New Window
Exec=terminator
TargetEnvironment=Unity

Your patch works perfectly for me and makes it a lot easier to use terminator when I don't have have an external mouse connected to my laptop. As my laptop only has two mouse buttons I have to click both at the same time to emulate a middle-click, this solves this problem perfectly.

This bug was fixed in the package terminator - 0.96-0ubuntu1
