Cannot upgrade between ubuntu releases if you remove ubuntu-desktop

Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

If you remove ubuntu-desktop it sometimes refuses to upgrade properly as it cant calculate the dependancies in the correct way - the obvious answer is to keep ubuntu-desktop installed but this forces you to install a lot of possibly unneccessary programs - could there be another meta-package for the vitals and the rest in a second meta package if people do want a standard install?

The meta-package you seek is ubuntu-minimal. This depends on the vital subsystems necessary for a smooth upgrade, but does not depend on all packages included in the standard install.

Changed in ubuntu-meta:
status: Unconfirmed → Fix Released

Thanks for this - I think in the official upgrade documentation it tells you
that you require ubuntu-desktop which is evidently incorrect.
