Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

For some reason, your system does not have sed installed. This is worrisome because it is a dependency of lsb-base, which itself is 'required', meaning you absolutely should have it.

Could you please try 'apt-get install sed lsb-base', and let us know (a) if that works and (b) if, after that, you are able to install samba-common?

thanks for the prompt response and suggestion.....I tried it but I'm not sure it worked......please see the text below....

I went through the 'upgrade' process to v11.04, rather than a 'fresh install'. Do you think a disk format and a new install from CD might resolve my issue?
.....or should  I try to persevere (and trouble you in the process?)
