Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting

I'd like to try the i810 modesetting branch for experimentation in feisty fawn (I'm aware that both feisty and that driver aren't stable yet). But unfortunately there is no way (short of some --force-* options) to install both xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting and ubuntu-desktop (because the latter has a dependency chain running from xorg -> xserver-xorg -> xserver-xorg-video-all -> xserver-xorg-video-i810, which is conflicting with xserver-xorg-video-i810).

I think that a "Provides: xserver-xorg-video-i810" in x-x-v-i810-modesetting would fix this problem.

I don't have this exact problem.

If I try to install the -modesetting driver, It tries to uninstall the xserver-xorg-driver-all package, as it depends on the i810 driver, and the i810-modesetting removes it. However, it doesn't remove the xorg package, so I can have the ubuntu-desktop with the i810-modesetting.

However, this is still a bug, as it shouldn't try to remove the xserver-xorg-video-all metapackage.

Hm ... I've tried again and it worked just as you described. Either something changed or (more likely) I've just made some mistake the first time. Feel free to close the bug, if you wish.

I'll leave this opened, as this is already a problem. There is no need in have to remove the video-all metapackage. I think there are 2 options so solve this:

a) make video-all depend on either i810 or i810-modesetting.
b) make i810-modesetting provide i810 driver.

I don't know if any of those ir good, but I think Debian should do this first (if they have the same problem), to not merge another package.
