Bug Description

Tried to load Feisty Herd 2 64-bit Live CD on my new AMD64 laptop, (Turion MK-36) multiple times, and it keeps freezing at approx the end of the 3rd progress block - i.e. Kubuntu logo disappears, progress bar changes from blue to green, (though both also happen with Edgy's 64-bit live CD, and it ends up doing fine) then goes through to the end of bar 3 and freezes every time, (i.e. can't run Herd 2 at all). Double-checked both the .iso and the CD created, both are fine. Don't have Bluetooth in the laptop, so it's not that.

Did let it sit for ~50 mins one of the times to see if anything would finally happen, and somewhere between mins 5 and 50, (went to dinner, so not sure when) looks like it reverted back to showing some of the packages loading, showed the following and then finally froze for good:

udevd[3760]: lookup_group: specified group 'nvram' unknown
udevd-event[3811]: udev_db_add_device: unable to create db file '/dev/.udev/db/class@input@mice': No such file or directory
 * Activating swap... [OK]
mount: Function not implemented
 * Checking file systems...
fsck 1.40-WIP (02-Oct-2006) [OK]

If there's any more info I can provide, etc., don't hesitate to ask, as I said, it's at least wonderfully replicable! ;)

Tried with the 32-bit version, and though it also crashed, responded _much_ faster, (i.e. 30-40 secs to the first crash message, (the 'nvram' line above) and with Call Trace info before freezing. Unfortunately, it output more than a single screen of trace info, but what's left on-screen is:

Hope that helps,

Adding
blacklist rtl8187
blacklist ieee80211_rtl
to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist fixed this for me.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available here: <http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems> Thanks!

Hey Christian,

Would be happy to, but unfortunately, this error, (which persists
through Herd 4, though some of the trace info changes with each
release, though the nvram and udev issues persist) stops the boot
process, so I can never get in to do anything on the LiveCD, (i.e.
I've never actually seen what 7.04 looks like :( ).

If there's something I can do during the boot process itself to
capture what info you need, let me know and would be happy to.

Thanks,

Dylan

Same thing here.
My config:
mobo: asus p5b deluxe
proc : core2 duo 6800
graph card: nvidia 8800 gtx

Feisty --current

I can boot sometimes but when i cannot, ctrl-alt-sup is necessary.

One hour ago i was trying to run: uname -a....... but it says system is
read-only, so i plug a usb pen and i try to send dmesg.log, lspci.... to
it but it says operation not permitted (i was able to acces usbpen and
to mkdir in it).
How can i do ?
(sorry for my bad english)

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
