Neomagic Corporation NM2200 - no sound

I don't know what that means. I downloaded a gstreamer plugin but I don't
know how to install it. I think it's a .gz file or some other package file.

I hope that's what you wanted. I don't know if this is related to the
problem but everytime I try to install something from the add/remove list I
get an error that says I need to run dpkg manually configure -a.

Oh yeah, I think my sound card is Yamaha OPL3-SA incase that helps.

Thanks for the additional information. It seems that your soundcard is detected by the kernel and a driver is being loaded. Could you please also add the output of 'amixer' and 'asoundconf list'? You may also find this helpful: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems .

I also have a question. When I try to install packages it says to run dpkg
configure -a, and so I did. But I have to be logged on as root. I looked at
a forum and found out how but it said it may 'cause your system to crash or
allow hackers to get into your system. My question is do you think I should
login as root and try fix the dpkg error?

In regards to using dpkg you could use the 'sudo' command which allows
you to run only specific applications as root. For example 'sudo dpkg
configure -a' would only run that one command as root.

When I run that command It still says I need to become root because i need
special privileges.

Yes, that is correct. You will become root but only for that one
command. You will not be logged is as root.

Oh i get it. thank you. I actually figured out the problem. I had to run
"sudo dpkg --configure -a" not "sudo dpkg configure -a" (notice the two
dashes before "configure") so now I don't have that error anymore but I
still have sound problems. Thanks for helping so far.

Hi ... I got exactly the same problem. I get similar outputs from lspci and lsmod

After I ran the "kil ....." command here is the output I got:

lsof: status error on /dev/dsp*: No such file or directory
kill: usage: kill [-s sigspec] ....... and so on
Password:
FATAL: Error inserting snd_cs4231 (path to the module snd-cs4231.ko)

I have tried changing module name to snd-cs4231-lib on my own accord and, althought that didn't give any errors, it didn't help either.

The kill command attempts to terminate any process which keeps a sound device busy. If you get the kill "usage" error then it just means there were no such processes.

(Perhaps better written with xargs so you can avoid the spurious error message:

lsof -t /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* 2>/dev/null | xargs -r0 kill

... but I digress.)

The first modprobe attempts to unload any sound-related modules. If it fails, the final modprobe will not be attempted.

(Better written witout a useless use of grep:

sudo modprobe -r $(lsmod | awk '/^snd/{print $1}') && sudo modprobe snd-cs4231

... but I digress again.)

The final modprobe apparently attempts to load the cs4231 driver instead of whatever you had before (snd-nm256 I imagine). The snd-cs4231-lib module is different from snd-cs4231 proper, and will presumably be loaded by modprobe already if you have a "top-level" module which depends on it (as apparently nm256 does, too).

If the command succeeded and sound still doesn't work, please say so here. If it didn't succeed, maybe you could try to blacklist the snd-nm256 module temporarily -- see http://bugs.debian.org/426166 for some sort of instructions.

(I have no knowledge of the NM2200, I stumbled over this bug while searching for something else.)

Oh and Seth: the "substitution failed" is unrelated, it just means the copy/paste of the command line was wrong. The command needs to be all on one line (make the window really wide, and/or the font really small, before copying text in order to avoid having any spurious line breaks, maybe?)

Ok, sorry everybody if I confused you. I was getting email taht said try the out put of...
But now I am posting on here. So that's why i said is this for installing ubuntu, 'cause i filed an error about that but have no more problems with that. By the way I am using feisty just so everyone knows. I am very thankful for all of you help so far.
