Bug Description

Sometimes (once or twice a week perhaps?), X hangs for me. I can still move the mouse pointer around, but the rest of the screen has turned into a screenshot. The mouse pointer doesn't change shape when I move it over different stuff. I get no reaction from any keyboard commands like c-a-backspace or c-a-f1.

When this happens I can ssh in from another system and do "killall -9 Xorg". That makes gdb re-start the X server and everything is back to normal.

I get this in my kernel.log when this happens:

root@transwarp:/var/log # grep NVRM kern.log*|grep -v loading
kern.log:Feb 6 10:04:53 localhost kernel: [17617098.708000] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 0480 ff1076ff 0000f304 ff2299ff ff0055ff
kern.log:Feb 7 08:28:54 localhost kernel: [17697732.116000] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 041c ff0055ff 0000fdbc ff2299ff ff2299ff

This could potentially be a duplicate of bug 58019, but they don't mention any kernel messages in there, and I haven't seen any WAIT messages in my Xorg logs.

johan@transwarp:~$ lspci |grep -i nv

Got another one :-(. This is a lot more common than a couple of times a week now, recent kernel upgrade?:

Johan:
Uh oh - NVRM: Xids. Basically the only people who can help you decode what those mean are NVIDIA employees. Xids are generated when the binary nvidia driver spots something unexpected happening. These could be down to driver bugs but likewise they could be down to various hardware settings or conflicts.

Your best bet is to get in contact with NVIDIA (e.g. via http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 ) although I suspect NVIDIA will want you to be running the very latest version of whatever driver supports your card before they will look at any particular issue...

(By the way Xids tend to be down to a particular combination of software and hardware. If you don't have an extremely similar XID to Johan's please check for a matching bug report elsewhere).

Can you take a look at Bug #109643 and try disabling powernowd (as described in that bug) then try rebooting so we can rule out CPU scaling as a cause?

Option "NvAGP" "0"

in xorg.conf fixed the problem in my machine. No freezes for three weeks.

and maybe
Option "NvAGP" "1"
could be faster. I haven't tried yet. But this works only with AGP cards, I think.

Doesn't seem to be running, so I can't disable it. Also, the symptoms in bug 109643 are different:
* I get syslog messages, they don't.
* My mouse pointer still works, theirs doesn't.
* My screen looks fine, theirs is garbled.
* They are on Feisty, I can't upgrade from Edgy because of bug 108098

This appears to be identical to bug 120347, correct?
I would have to assume in this case that the messages you find in your kernel log are not related to this problem at all, because in 120347, no messages were found.

I doubt they are the same because 120347 is about Intel drivers whereas this is about NVIDIA drivers.

Ubuntu 6.10 is obsolete by now, so closing the bug as WONTFIX.
