Bug Description

Well, okay, not permanently. But to many Mac users, this would call for a trip to an Apple store, where they would surely be charged some crazy sum of money as the warranty is long over on this model.

Machine in question:

iMac G4 roundbase, 800MHz
768MiB system memory
60GiB HD

On shutdown, the system does not eject the CD as other systems will. No response from eject button on keyboard. Pressing enter results in a line of characters appearing on screen: ^[*, where * is a letter, but no response from the machine otherwise. Turning off the system required holding the power button for 5 seconds.

After doing this, the system would not power on again until I opened the enclosure and removed the backup battery. Once this was done, the system started normally.

Quite alarming for a live disc that isn't supposed to make any changes to one's system. I will attempt to repeat it soon, when I have the patience.

the CD not ejecting is true for all systems cf bug 84592,

Enter not working is also true for all Macs and some amd64, without the line of ^[* though, CTRL^J might reboot or halt the box.

Nedd for removing the backup battery is a new one and scary.

This should be fixed in Herd 6. Please test and let us know.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

PowerPC is community-supported, but there are no Live-CDs available at the moment. The alternate install CD can be downloaded from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily/current/

Only developers should state that they are not going to fix a bug. I see no reason why this couldn't be fixed in the ports kernel if it's still an issue. powerpc CDs still exist even though they aren't officially-supported any more; see, for example:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily-live/current/

affects: linux (Ubuntu) → linux-ports (Ubuntu)

status: Won't Fix → Incomplete

We'd like to figure out what's causing this bug for you, but we haven't heard back from you in a while. Could you please provide the requested information?
Can you also test the latest development version: 10.04?
You can download it at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/daily-live/current/
Thanks!
