Bug Description

From CK:
http://testcms.ubunut.com/community/participate/developerzone

This page should support two user goals:

a) Help a developer find the wiki based pages that actually explain how to get involved
b) Give a none-developer an idea of who, why and how Ubuntu is developed.

We should expand this page to cover

a) Who is involved in developing Ubuntu (Canonical, Community, Partner developers)
b) The summit / sprint process - this is a compelling story that we should make more of
c) An idea of the reviweing and testing process to reassure them of the standards and security that we have in place

I think this is a good idea. As a volunteer Ubuntu dev I kinda feel like the developerzone doesn't really have anything to really grab a persons attention and make them *want* to contribute. I've often seen where people are amazed at that *they* can contribute to Ubuntu development. It'd be nice to have a few examples of what "development" even means.

It contains a link to the wiki page UbuntuDevelopment, which is intended to
do this.

Really? I'd prefer that the page remain developer-focused, with its primary
goal being to attract new developers to the project.

Agreed. I don't seem to be able to edit the page, though. I'm HTTP
authenticated as 'testers'.

This will be covered in UbuntuDevelopment when I get around to writing it.

Rationale?

It might be worthwhile to link to http://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/GettingStarted

I don't understand why this page and <http://wiki.ubuntu.com/> both exist. All the user goals listed seem like goals that the wiki front page should be fulfilling.

Also, it's misleading to call something a "zone" when it's only one page.

wiki.ubuntu.com is not an obvious entry point. Visitors should be able to find all of the content they need from www.ubuntu.com.

Right, so "Get Involved" on www.ubuntu.com could go directly to (a prettied-up version of) http://wiki.ubuntu.com/ instead of to an interstitial page.

(At the Boston Gnome Summit on October 12, Natan Yellin gave a talk during which he mocked the Ubuntu developerzone page -- along with its gnome.org equivalent -- for not being encouraging or useful to potential developers.)

I'd love to see this happen, but I don't think this bug's existence is going to increase its chances. Closing for housekeeping.

My idea was to get something like http://daniel.holba.ch/temp/guide/introduction-to-ubuntu-development.html (with changed CSS, more links, etc.) on ubuntu.com/developer
