Could you launch compiz from the terminal and write here the output?

Also, tell us which Ubuntu/desktop-effects/compiz version are you running.

Thanks
Emilio

Exactly the same thing happens for me with the very latest compiz, 0.3.6-1ubuntu4 -- it also happened with -ubuntu3. This started happening with a recent update but compiz was not one of the updated packages, so I'm not sure what caused it. If I start compiz from the terminal, it doesn't run at all:

$ compiz --replace &
[2] 15461
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with indirect rendering. Aborting!

This is on an amd64 laptop with the ATI fglrx driver (which means that I'm running XGL).

Johan.

Could you run:
"glxinfo | tee glxinfo.log"
And attach the file "glxinfo.log"?

Thanks
Emilio

well i had similar errors on console when manually issuing a compiz or compiz.real --replace as Johan says he has. I actually got compiz up using the desktop-effects control panel but i got partial effects (windows wobbled) but the cpu usage was very high, and there were lots of visual artifacts (banding, almost like what an refresh rate overdrive used to look like) but these lasted for fractions of a second intermittently showing what ought be painted from the buffer. After reading your e-mail i tried again to issue compiz via the terminal but it basically made my desktop unresponsive (could'nt change window focus, missing decorators, high cpu utilization, other random weirdness. and i couldnt coax any terminal error output :-(

running nvidia v9631 w/ whatever is built into the xserver (AIGLX i think)

btw to anyone else trying to get some terminal output issuing compiz, ctrl-c and type "metacity" to bring back your desktop w/o having to kill the whole xserver.

compiz and compiz-* packages recieved updates on this morns update-manager run but issuing a compiz --replace still yields a largely unusable windowmanger w/ many things (like the taskbar/panel being unresponsive) and ctrl-c and then metacity must be invoked to restore usability... (atleast the gnome terminal works through all this wm madness). but still no terminal error messages lol hrmm

I've played some more with trying to get compiz to work and this is what I get now:

$ compiz --indirect-rendering --replace &
[2] 15220
/usr/bin/compiz.real: GLX_SGIX_fbconfig is missing
/usr/bin/compiz.real: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No manageable screens found on display :1.0

$

If I try "LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa compiz.real --indirect-rendering --replace", compiz actually starts, but with the infamous white screen.

This bug was previously marked as a duplicate of bug #86797, but that bug was closed so I de-duped this one.

Alright then, I guess this was an XGL problem. Closing.
