Bug Description

I'm sitting on a Dell Precision M65 laptop with built in sound card of type Sigmatel.

lspci is telling me

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)

When pressing sound capture test in Sound Preferences the rather obscure error popup appears with the text:

gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile = chat: Could not open resource for writing.

Any progress on this one? We see this problem on other Dell machines
as well. Did you have enough info to solve the problem?

You need to unmute and raise Capture and possibly Capture Mux.

Thanks! I found that hidden away... Now, everything works just fine!

However, I think it's really possible to make the sound tools in
Ubuntu Gnome a little more "understandable". I really don't think that
all the Capture Mux, PCM etc etc should be possible for a common user
to access in the Volume Control (Alsa mixer). It's just plain
confusing. I'm aware that it's difficult to make generic GUIs that
would cover all types of hardware setup on a PC, but I would say:
simplify them, and rather make advanced GUIs that the expert user can
install in addition.

Also, the error messages are really strange. My grandma wouldn't
exactly know what to do if she encountered these. (I didn't and I'm a
system developer...)

Best regards,
Helge Fredriksen

Hi,

I am a newbie to ubuntu. I am experiencing the same problem as specified in this bug. Can somebody please tell me how to ¨unmute and raise Capture and possibly Capture Mux.¨ Is this to be done though some command or is it through the ¨sound preferences¨? I could not find a way in the ¨sound preferences" to unmute. I can see the Capture and Capture Mux in the device list and both are selected. Still I get the same error message. I have ubuntu 7.04 on my Inspiron 6400 laptop. All other sound tests in that works.

TIA
Regards
Prasanth
