Can you reproduce this issue? If so, how?

The stacktrace, as is, does not help much...

Hello,

I installed Kubuntu Feisty, which works very well. Then I installed
"ubuntu-desktop" and GNOME has never ever worked without crashing. I
even tried deleting the gtk2-engines-qt or something like that to see
if that was the problem, but nothing good came out of that.

The problem happens every time I login in GNOME.

Thanks!

Mariano

Thanks, this helps.

So you had gtk-qt-engine installed... OK, think might very well have something to do with it.

1. do you still have it installed? If so, did you update it recently? Bug # 36256 states a fix to the issue on Gnome has been released as of Feb 23rd, so the latest release of it should be enough for you.

Please note that -- if this is the case -- just installing the updated gtk-qt-engine is *not* enough: you also have to perform some additional steps, as specified in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-engine/+bug/36256/comments/53

2. If you have uninstalled it, then please also remove the following directory and file:

~/.gtkrc2.0
~/.gtk_qt_engine_rc

If one of the above options match your environment, please try the appropriate one, and then please report back on the results.

Hello,

I just double checked, the dtk2... package was NOT installed. So, the
problem occured even without the qt-gtk engine...

It is curious as I did the same in Edgy, and I had the
"gnome-theme-manager" crashing on me. I reported the bug and removing
the gtk2 package solved the problem (Although now the GTK applications
look ugly on KDE).

The system is up-to-date. I update Feisty every day to help finding bugs etc.

Thanks!

Let me know what else I can do.

Cheers

Mariano

Mariano, I am very sorry for the delay.

I have two questions for you:

1. if you first installed kubuntu, then gtk-qt-engine was probably also installed (and perhaps later removed). This may mean you still have the directory and the file I pointed out (~/.gtkrc2.0, and ~/.gtk_qt_engine_rc.

If indeed they are present could you please remove or rename them & try again?

2. are you still experiencing the issue?

Thanks and, again, sorry for the delay.

Hello,

I stopped experiencing this problem once I removed both the
gtk2-engine and the gtk-qt engine. But I think that's not a nice
solution since now my GTK apps look very ugly in KDE.

I just checked but neither folders are in my home directory.

Thanks!

@mariano: bug # 36256 reports a fix released for the gtk2 engine that caused gnome to crash -- and the reason I suspect, for you to remove it.

You can re-install it, but please be sure to follow the instructions.

I will close this bug reject.

Also, please provide more info on what you were doing when you got this crash, and if it is repeatable.
