Just a moment ago, gaim just closed and the bug tool created a report.

Thanks for your bug report. The crash looks like a memory corruption. Could you try to get a valgrind log for it with libglib2.0-0-dbg libgtk2.0-0-dbg gaim-dbg installed? (you can follow the instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind for that)

Yesterday I ran memtest86 provided with the Ubuntu start menue for 16 passes, no errors were detected. I'll try Valgrind asap, too.

deivid, the bug crash happens to g_slice_alloc(), your to strcmp() and is a duplicate from bug #72204
