Bug Description

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-dev

when installing through synaptic package manager or apt-get the following comes up:

libgtk2.0-dev:
Depends: libxcursor-dev but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libxfixes-dev but it is not going to be installed

-----------------

when trying to install libfixes-dev the following comes up as error:

ibxfixes-dev:
Depends: libxfixes3 (=1:3.0.1.2-0ubuntu3) but 1:4.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

------------------

Attempt to uninstall libfixes3 so libfixes can be put in will give an unattractive result of removing gdm, gnome and half the system

Please excuse the ignorance but I do not know how to get out of the silly reasining loop. Maybe I'm too new at this... :-)

ps I have done apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and it does not help

Which means that dapper has "1:3.0.1.2-0ubuntu3" and that you installed "1:4.0-0ubuntu1" from somewhere. That's not an Ubuntu bug, you probably want to stick to official packages for the version of the distribution

Dear Sebastien,
I am happy to plead Mea Culpa any day as I may not know how I have caused the problem and I understand that you reject the report of the bug.

From my perspective I have only used Synaptic Package Manager and have not been experimenting with any packages I might get on the internet. I have never even run apt-**** from the terminal until I hit the problem. The only software not installed from Synaptic was Zend Studio 5.5 and that should not have installed this package. I have now de-installed Zend and the problem remains.

Now that I am where I am I would like to ask for an answer to 2 quick questions:
1. Will you be able to help me - give instructions - to reverse the problem Y/N will do...?
2. If it is a no, do I blow away the system and reinstall the system from scratch as the only resonable way of reversing the problem?

Regards,
Mick

Could you look at the top entry from /usr/share/doc/libxfixes3/changelog.Debian.gz and note it to a comment? The libxfixes3 1:4.0-0ubuntu1 version has not been uploaded to Ubuntu, maybe you used some extra apt source for compiz or something? Then to fix the bug you can run "sudo apt-get install libxfixes3/dapper" which will reinstall the official dapper version

I would like to thank you for helping me with the problem. Your suggested fix has worked. I copy in below the first few lines of the file as you have requested. I have also taken out all community maintained universes that are not supported.

Thank you again and I will try not to bother you again with silly questions,
Mick

PS
In case you care, I am trying to understand what I can about Ubuntu because I may be able to help a little with the "bug report #1". After I get a level of comfort with what the desktop can do, I'm considering a target of 1000+ desktops deployment initially . I have ability to further influence decissions about 50,000+ desktops. It is not an ideological point of view but rather a practical one :-))
Good luck with that original bug report.

You are welcome. The changelog copy show that you install a libxfixes package from "reggaemanu <email address hidden>" which is not an official Ubuntu package, maybe you tried to get compiz from some place which had that package also.

Nice to read about the desktop deployment, don't hesitate to open bugs about problems you might face ;)
