Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I am using feisty with latest updates.

I can see no capture device in gnome-sound-recorder. I don't know what is the exact reason, but I believe that same thing is giving me troubles in Jokosher.

I can see capture device in audacity and have also recorded from it.

Following is output when launched from command line.

(gnome-sound-recorder:8018): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_implements_interface_cast: assertion `gst_element_implements_interface (GST_ELEMENT (from), iface_type)' failed

** (gnome-sound-recorder:8018): CRITICAL **: fill_record_input: assertion `GST_IS_MIXER (window->priv->mixer)' failed

Currently your 'Line' element is toggled for capture:

Simple mixer control 'Line',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-exclusive
  Capture exclusive group: 0
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [on] Capture [on] <--
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [on] Capture [on] <--

Note also that your 'IEC958' (optical output) element is unmuted for playback, which is known to affect functionality:

Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on] Capture [off]

Is the above setting intentional?

'Line' was toggled when I made recording using audacity.

But the other setting is unintentional. I don't even know what it is. The only input/output I ever use are Line, Mic, Master, PCM.

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Yes, I tested it with gutsy and it is even more bad. The sound recorder shows an error and closes. Error is something related to 'multimedia settings' not being proper. And I don't know what I am supposed to do about it. I tried changing many things in Preferences->Sound and also in volume control but nothing helped. :-(

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Onkar
Could you please include the output of the following command:

user@machine:~$ gconftool-2 -g /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc

i get the same message you mention in your last post, and change the sound capture to alsasrc solve the problem for me.
