When i click on Test in Sound Preferences and the option is autodetect for the sound card, the sound preferences crash.

could you get a log with "GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1 GST_DEBUG=5 gnome-sound-properties &>log" and attach it to the bug?

I get bash: log: Permission denied
On this vmware appliance I have sudo privileges but am unable to log in as
su
