Sound Preferences crashed when i click on "Test" under sound events playback

When i click on Test in Sound Preferences and the option is autodetect for the sound card, the sound preferences crash.

I get bash: log: Permission denied
On this vmware appliance I have sudo privileges but am unable to log in as
su
