Xorg failes to start on sparc

X.Org X server

Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg-common

When starting X the below error occurs:

Fatal server error:
xf86MapPciMem: Could not mmap PCI memory Inappropiate ioctl for device

it is also discussed in this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=307406

However the fix no longer works in Feisty.

After the fix this error occurs:

Fatal server error:
Unable to load required base modules, Exiting...

Reading through the log it complains about modules that it tries to load are newer than the server version and module requirement mismatch.
So I guess the modules are now to new for the copied Xorg.

I had hoped that this bug that existed in Edgy would had been fixed in Feisty but it appears not.

regards,
Mico

I tried the Xorg from debian experimental (xserver-xorg-core_1.2.99.902-1)
but it has the same problem as the feisty one.
So no workarounds for feisty untill the Xorg is fixed....

Is it possible to keep feisty and downgrade xorg to edgy and use the workaround with the debian Xorg?

If yes how would i go about doing this?

seems that the bug was reintroduced with xorg-server-1.2.. The patch is there but it isn't enough. I'm not sure how hard it would be to use the old packages. You could try poking the guy who did that patch to take a look.

I have the same problem in my Sun Ultra 5 with the original (I believe) SUN video card (manufactured by ATI).

Any help would be welcome!!!

Thanks!

I'm not sure which bug is which, but this morning, I tried dist-upgrade from
the gusty repository, and I am still getting my original problem on my Sparc
Ultra 5, which is:

xf86MapPciMem: Could not mmap PCI memory
[base=0xe2000000,hostbase=0xe2000000,size=2000] (Inappropriate ioctl for
device)

I got back to a working state by installing these packages from
debian/unstable:
xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-input-all
xserver-xorg-input-evdev xserver-xorg-input-kbd xserver-xorg-input-mouse
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics xserver-xorg-input-wacom xserver-xorg-video-apm
xserver-xorg-video-ark xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-chips
xserver-xorg-video-cirrus xserver-xorg-video-dummy xserver-xorg-video-fbdev
xserver-xorg-video-glint xserver-xorg-video-i128 xserver-xorg-video-i740
xserver-xorg-video-imstt xserver-xorg-video-mga xserver-xorg-video-neomagic
xserver-xorg-video-nv xserver-xorg-video-rendition
xserver-xorg-video-s3virge xserver-xorg-video-savage
xserver-xorg-video-siliconmotion xserver-xorg-video-sunbw2
xserver-xorg-video-suncg14 xserver-xorg-video-suncg3
xserver-xorg-video-suncg6 xserver-xorg-video-sunffb
xserver-xorg-video-sunleo xserver-xorg-video-suntcx xserver-xorg-video-tdfx
xserver-xorg-video-trident xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-video-vga

Fortunately, this does not affect KDE, so I was able to run the newest KDE
with the debian/stable xserver-xorg stuff.

Tim,
Great input...
Sorry for the silly question...
But how did you download the packages from the Debian unstable?
What is the repository you pointed to?
I have Ethernet up and running so I can access the Net.
But I don't know the exact commands... Sorry

Thanks again for your help!

Debian #422077 seems to match this problem. There is a patch included in xorg-server 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-5 which reportedly fixes this. This will be picked up when we next sync xorg-server (hopefully soon).

Meantime, they also report that as a workaround, you can unmount /sys before starting X. For details see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=422077.

James,

xserver-xorg dfsg-5 is not released yet it is still on dfsg-4 in the repository. Please note this is regarding Gutsy!
by the way unmounting /sys did not do the trick for me (got different error though) but that may be my system only. I did not look into that as I was waiting for the permanent fix.
Perhaps you can try and report back if unmounting /sys before starting x is working for you.

I have an ultra-10 standing by to test this one as soon as the xorg package is available.

Cheers

I installed with Ubuntu 7.04 'Feisty' on my Sun Ultra 10 and setup ubuntu-desktop, but got the error mentioned originally. Unmounting /sys "fixed" X so it could start.

Thanks for reporting back with your findings Charles and Eric. A new xorg-server has been released to Gutsy last week; can you test against this version? I think it should have the fix for the problem reported upstream, and it would be good to know whether it fixes things for you. (Possibly you two have different bugs since unmounting /sys worked for one but not the other.)

Not the same error as before but a new one.

The error from the log:
  Fatal server error:
xf86MapPciMem: Could not mmap PCI memory [base=0x100000,hostbase=0x100000,size=2000] (Invalid argument)

Reasons why you may want to try GNU/Linux:

I downloaded 7.10 today, from a UK mirror.

The install has just finished.

I did a base install, then did an

apt-get gnome fvwm-crystal xorg

Xorg works properly, with the keyboard mapped correctly. I do get some Gnome problems and Firefox has a habit of crashing, but these are not X problems.

Happy with this result.

Many thanks,

Chris.
