Bug Description

Using ubuntu 6.06 on an MSI S260 laptop.
when pressing the "power" button on the top right hand side of the top gnome pannel, the screen greys out and a new menu of log out, lock screen, switch user along the top and shutdown, hibernate, reboot along the bottom.

At some point during updates, I can't be exact as I don't often use the power off menu, the power off and reboot button appears to have dissapeared.

I am not running any 3rd party applications or graphical enchancments such as beryl or compiz.

I'm using a fully updated Xorg from 6.06 with the intel 810 driver.

Ubuntu is running fully updated on all installed packages.

I can't remember what the correct package for this is, I can't see it in gnome-applets or gnome-panel but it's late... Assigning the bug to the desktop team, one of the team members will..

Thank you for your bug. Are you using gdm? Did you change its configuration?

Assuming you are using XGL, this is a known error. However, there is a workaround.

Your startxgl.sh file should be as follows:

#!/bin/sh
Xgl -fullscreen :1 -ac -br -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer &
sleep 4
export DISPLAY=:1
cookie="$(xauth -i nextract - :0 | cut -d ' ' -f 9)"
xauth -i add :1 . "$cookie"
exec gnome-session

Hi,

Yes I am using GDM, I have not changed the GDM config myself, but I believe something has ( I can only assume the application of a theme as I have lost my shutdown buttons from gdm also)

Here is a prudent portion of my gdm config

# The Actions menu (formerly system menu) is shown in the greeter, this is the
# menu that contains reboot, shutdown, suspend, config and chooser. None of
# these is available if this is off. They can be turned off individually
# however.
SystemMenu=true
# Configuration is available from the system menu of the greeter.
ConfigAvailable=false
# Should the chooser button be shown. If this is shown, GDM can drop into
# chooser mode which will run the xdmcp chooser locally and allow the user to
# connect to some remote host. Local XDMCP does not need to be enabled,
# however.
ChooserButton=true

I am not using XGL/Compiz/Beryl anything like that

could you copy the "RebootCommand=" value? Does the corresponding binary is available?

Hi,

certainly

# Reboot, Halt and suspend commands, you can add different commands separated
# by a semicolon. GDM will use the first one it can find.
RebootCommand=/sbin/shutdown -r now "Rebooted from gdm menu."
HaltCommand=/sbin/shutdown -h now "Halted from gdm menu."
SuspendCommand=/usr/sbin/pmi action sleep

the shutdown command is present and works as thats how I've been shutting the laptop down

$ ls -la /sbin/shutdown
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18572 2006-05-23 11:39 /sbin/shutdown

That looks correct, we get hundred of bugs a week and I'm quite busy at the moment, sending back to unconfirmed, maybe somebody else can investigate, that's likely coming from your configuration though

Hi

I agree this is likey coming from a configuration, however gdm appears to be configured to enable the correct settings, I've swapped gtk and gdm themes to see if they make a difference. I agree this is a low priority but if this does turn out to be a bug perhaps say with a downloaded update then this could effect more people.

I'd be happy to work with people to resolve this but I have taken this as far as I can at this moment by verfying the settings "should" work therefore I can only assume there is something else at work.

I have the same problem. My gnome "System" menu only has a "Quit" option, and it drops me directly to gdm. from gdm I have all of the usual options. I have beryl installed but its not running. I use the latest nvidia drivers so no Xgl. and my gdm config is the same as the original poster. I've had this issue since shortly after installing Edgy. and it persisted through a dist-upgrade to Feisty. Nobody has been able to offer any help on it, and its a real pain because this is a laptop and I'd like to work on getting suspend/resume working, but its useless if I have to log out to do it. if I can offer any help in troubleshooting this I'd be glad to do whatever i can.

Please keep this bug report free or random clutter

1.) this bug is reported on Ubuntu x86 6.06 fully patched
2.) I do not have installed any graphical enchancments such as beryl/compiz/xgl

You report references Edgy, Fesity which is beta software and Beryl. Totally different senario

How is it totally different? it only proves that the problem has persisted
through three ubuntu version given the proper circumstances. I have beryl
installed, but its not running and i'm quite confident that it isn't
responsible. the Symptoms are identical and theres no information
indicating either way if the cause is related. its quite unappropriate to
jump to the conclusion that they are unrelated.
Edgy is not Beta, and Feisty is on its way out of beta. so we know that the
problem hasn't been fixed with any recent updates, whereas that can't be
confirmed by your system running 6.06.
The bugs are related, DO NOT remove my comment from the post.

This bug has been fixed by using the following process.
Go to: System -> Administration -> Login Window

On the Local tab under "Menu Bar" the option "Show Actions menu" has to be enabled.

this resolves the issue on both the shutdown button screen and on the login/gdm screen.

However this is a fix of the symptoms, the problem appears to be either a theme or gdm theme has the ability to change this setting.
