Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-12-generic

I want to use my USB Wireless Dongle SMC EZ Connect SMCWUSB-G, which has the zd1211b chipset.
As of 2.6.18 the driver should be in the kernel. But alas, it doesn't yet work out of the box in Feisty.
After a modprobe I find this in the dmesg:
[ 1398.006759] ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'
[ 1398.009287] ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.13
[ 1398.009291] ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation <email address hidden>
[ 1398.019723] usbcore: registered new interface driver zd1211rw

But iwconfig or ifconfig, doesn't report a wireless device. It does show up in lsusb though.

Even the following description how I got it to work on Edgy doesn't work anymore.

Please provide the output of "lsusb -vv" with the device plugged in. Attach it to the bug report (do not paste into comment).

Thanks

Hope this helps.

I have found a fix for this problem. This really should get into the repos, because it is basically just an edit of the source. To add this device id.
More info can be found here:
http://<email address hidden>/msg01030.html
I am going to fix it for myself now (or at least try), but I hope this will get into the repos.

This device is already supported in zd1211rw-mac80211. Blacklist zd1211rw and add zd1211rw-mac80211 to /etc/modules.

How would I add zd1211rw-mac80211 to /etc/modules?

Thanks in advance,

Willem

Use 'sudo gedit /etc/modules', type 'zd1211rw-mac80211' at the bottom of the file, then File/Quit.

Similarly for blacklisting, use 'sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist', enter 'blacklist zd1211rw', then File/Quit.

Thanks, now I feel a bit stupid. I thought that you meant something

This shouldn't be rejected - it's a legitimate bug if the default driver doesn't drive the hardware.

Hi Willem,

This bug report was marked "Fix Committed" a while ago but there hasn't been any recent activity. Can you just verify this bug has been resolved and we'll go ahead and mark this bug report as "Fix Released". Thanks in advance.

As far as I know it has been solved, because it was a fairly easy fix.
But I don't really have any means to check since I fixed it on my own
machine straight away.
Just needed to add a USB ID to some list or something if I remember it
correctly.
Yes, just checked the e-mails...
So I think it is safe to say the bug has been fixed.

Keep up the great work!

Willem

The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
