Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

After updating the Feisty kernel from 2.6.20.9 (herd 5) to 2.6.20.13 together with all other updates (500 mb) including ndiswrapper and networkmanager my wireless fails to work (AMD64) on the "13" kernel and not on the "9". Used Ndiswrapper 1.19 and Ndisgtk 6.2 / 6.3 to load windows Asus Wl-138g driver. Driver is shown and hardware is present, wlan0 is shown in iwconfig. Interfaces file is clean except for "lo". Modules file has ndiswrapper added. Network-manager gnome displays wireless networks around and wired network options. However when I try to connect to my network using 2.6.20.13 kernel it fails. Rebooting with the 2.6.20.9 kernel and trying to connect gives a good connection (while not having changed anything else). I connect with DHCP and WPA.

Under 2.6.20.13 kernel boot syslog shows errors in HAL with ndiswrapper and also in WPA_supplicant.

Hum. Interesting. Since going to 2.6.20-13 & companion upgrades I was also experiencing this problem, in fact even worse: I could not connect even via wired after failing the wireless (and had to reboot my access point twice during my tries).

So I went to reboot to collect brand new data and... for the very first time in Feisty (since alpha) I got a wireless connection even before the login was completed!

Weird... I will check packages updated today for a potential hit, but I am certain HAL was updated.

I am attaching the syslog for the failed activations this morning, and the syslog for the successful activation now. I will reboot to see what happens (I am applying a new batch of updates that include HAL).

Instead of using the NDIS wrapper (which we cannot debug), how about trying bcm43xx-mac80211?

I would love to use that, but the chipset is not Broadcom = Asus WL-138g v2, but Marvell = Asus WL-138g v1. Marvell has no Linux drivers for this chipset as far as I can see. Neither has Asus.

Tim, I would really like to use bcm43xx, but the 4318 implementation is still sort of limited.

@Jouke74: I cannot reproduce this error anymore. If you still have it, please attach here the data Tim has asked for.

Ok here are the dmesg, lsmod and lspci attachemnets.

I have installed a clean Feisty Beta, installed Ndiswrapper from the Beta CD. Downloaded NDISGTK from the Feisty repository. Downloaded NDiswrapper from the repository. Installed Ndswrapper and NdisGTK with sudo dpkg -i nameoffile.deb. Erased all network connections from my interfaces files. Added ndiswrapper to the modules file. Then did the commando's you said.

Also, does it work with the current kernel (2.6.20-15)?

I have downloaded the Feisty daily build of April 15th (since I don't have an Ubuntu internet connection without wireless, (dual boot windows)). Reinstalled the system and started again. Kernel 2.6.20-15-generic (AMD64), used synaptic to get Ndiswrapper 1.9 installed and Ndiswrapper common. Downloaded Ndisgtk from the repositories using windows, and installed the DEB under Ubuntu. Checked if all dependencies were there including Network manager and Gnome network manager. Emptied the /etc/network/modules file accept for the loopback, and added ndiswrapper to the modules file. Installed the suggested 64 bit windows driver for Asus Wl-138g (which never gave me problems before).

End result was still the same:
- No internet.
- Ndiswrapper -l showed driver is present and ready. Ndisgtk showed drivers is not present ???
- Network card is found under dmesg and iwconfig without problems.
- Using Network-manager with WPA fails to connect the wireless card to anything.

Downloaded Wifi radar and used this after uninstalling network manager (+gnome dependency).
- No internet again (this may be also be user error, what driver needs to be used???).

Reinstalled Ubuntu (getting close to doing this with my eyes closed).
- Downloaded the latest 1.42 Ndiswrapper source.
- Installed this following site-manual instructions, did not use Ndisgtk.
- Tried network manager again, and again a no internet.. however this time the green dot on my side of the network blinked for a sec.
- Wlan0 was present and working, but fails to connect.

So I made a drastic decision:
- I reconfigured my router to use WEP-128 encryption instead of WPA.
(I made access only available for the MAC address of my computer and my wife's).
- Reconfigured windows wireless (sigh, I wish this was similar in Ubuntu) and dealt with angry wife.
- Booted in Ubuntu.
- Tried network manager with WEP, again failure to connect.
- Removed the Network manager (+gnome dependency) with synaptic.
- Opened Administration > Network
- Unchecked the roaming.
- Filled in all the data in manual configuration (WEP key under hex and network DCHP settings etc.) using WLAN0.
- Rebooted and ... there was internet with everything!!!
- Add the network montior to the upper bar... and checked a few non-flash websites.

Thus:
- There are no network bugs in the clean kernel.
- Current CDrom Ndiswrapper 1.38 fails to work well with Kernel 2.6.20-15 for my wireless card, a 1.42 rebuild from source worked better.
(This failure of Ndiswrapper may be Ndisgtk related. The two don't work together at their best, I wonder if the version is different at all to be honest.)
- WPA supplicant, network manager and Ndiswrapper definitively have problems working together, maybe the network manager options are parsed incorrectly to WPA and Ndiswrapper modules (could be rights related, simply the wrong parameters are given, or other changed for things since kernel 2.6.17.13).
- I don't know whether it is WPA_supplicant or Network manager giving trouble, as I cannot use WPA under manual network. But given that WEP also does not work in the network manager I assume the network manager has problems.

For an easier wireless internet this d...

I had the same problem after upgrading from 2.6.20-9. It was resolved on 2.6.20-14 with Ndiswrapper 1.41 installed from the source tarball ( sudo make uninstall, make, sudo make install). After upgrade to 2.6.20-15 I had to repeat the proceeding. It is working with WPA on my Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI Card .

I am sure with time I can make it work manually with WPA also, but I don't know how to edit the interfaces file the right way.
Did you use gnome-network-manager? Or configured it manually / another way?

then, a just had to reinstall ndiswrapper manually.

I have the same symptoms, although with a different chipset, ACX111 using ndiswrapper 1.9. Wireless with WPA only works intermittently since upgrading from 2.6.20.9 to 2.6.20.10 onwards, up to .15. I haven't tried upgrading ndiswrapper yet (1.42 now) as Paulo suggested, going to do that soon.

Okay, compiling Ndiswrapper 1.42 and installing it for 2.6.15 fixes it. My problem was confirmed to be related to bug #83479.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

After testing countless times with the Asus WL-138 and getting disconnected with almost each distro upgrade because of errors in either Ndiswrapper, Kernel, WPA or the Gnome Wireless manager, I simply decided to buy a Linksys WMP54G card. It's supported straight out of the box and works with Hardy Heron LTS. As long as there are no serious improvements with Intreped Ibex , Jojo Jeewhatanames etc.. I am quitting on trying to solve these issues and stick to HH. So no, I won't test the new Kernel.

Thanks for the update Jouke74. If things are working fine for you with Hardy it sounds perfectly reasonable to stick with it and no need to test Intrepid. We'll keep this open for a little while longer just in case anyone else is able to test. Thanks.
