Bug Description

Binary package hint: restricted-manager

The restricted-manager alway installs an old 386 kernel when i try to install the nvidia-glx driver. The driver does only work with this kernel and not with the generic. I've this problem since Feisty Herd 4, now using the beta with daily updates. Don't want to use the 386 kernel because this kernel doesn't support the second core of my AMD Athlon X2.

This problem also appears on my Acer Travelmate C200 Notebook with a freshly installed Feisty Beta (The CD version with no updates. As soon as I updated everything the restricted-manger fails to detect my Geforce Go 6200).

Can you please give some more details about this? r-m itself does not install any kernels, just nvidia-glx or nvidia-glx-legacy.

When I tried to install the nvidia-glx driver via the restricted-manager it wanted to install the linux-restricted-modules for the 386 kernel as dependency. But this is unnecessary because the generic restricted modules were already installed. And because the 386 restricted modules have the 386 kernel as dependency. But this is maybe rather a dependency problem than a r-m problem?!

Through the daily updates i wasn't able to reproduce the bug as I described it. Actually I removed the manual installed nvidia driver, then tried to install it again via r-m. It only downloaded an extracted a file named 'nvidia-glx_1.0.9755+2.6.20.4-13.14_i386.deb'. After a reboot the XServer couldn't get load. '/lib/modules/2.6.20-13-gerneric/volatile/nvidia.ko could not be open' => 'Failed to load NVIDIA kernel modules'. I thought it maybe work when I install a 386 Kernel again, but this time it didn't work with that kernel, too.
Now the r-m provides no driver for my Nvidia card any longer. So I will reinstall it manual again.

Both -generic and -i386 provide the necessary nvidia API, so I guess this was due to your manual changes.

The missing nvidia.ko modules is an issue, though.

Please see my comment at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20/+bug/106906/comments/22
for a possible solution if you were manually installing nvidia drivers.

When i remove the manual installed Nvidia driver, r-m always telling me, that my hardware doesn't need any closed source drivers. BUT r-m shows when the driver is in use (after I installed it manually again).
So I can't really answer your question Sitsofe Wheeler, sorry.

Can you post the output of
lspci -vnn | grep -i nv -A3
?

What exactly is the problem though? Bug reports can only be about one issue and I'm not sure what this bug is about... Is it simply restricted-manager doesn't recognise your card out of the box?

newur (newur) wrote :

The problem changed a bit in the behaviour since feisty beta, but the result was always the same. Restricted-Manager didn't install a working Nvidia driver.

The latest version of the problem is that r-m mentions that my hardware doesn't need any restricted drivers. In some older versions of r-m the card was recognised out of the box + a modem I didn't have. ^^ I attach the output you asked me for.

What is the output of:

You would be surprised. Sometimes you ask and you never hear anything back again. It take time for me to to go through bugs too...

So far so good. Everything looks in order but clearly something must be wrong from your earlier comments.

What is the output of:
dpkg -l nvidia\* | grep ii
ls -al /lib/linux-restricted-modules/
sudo modprobe nvidia
dmesg | tail
and can you also upload a
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
after an attempt to use the binary driver (if you start X again then it will be put in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old)?

Bad news. Whichever driver you currently have installed is spitting out NVRM: Xid messages
[ 54.312000] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 6, PE0002 0184 beef0201 00000054 f6d4b0b0 05000400
[ 54.312000] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 30, L1 -> L0

[ 54.388000] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 30, L1 -> L0

That's not a great sign. If you are having strange issues like unusual pauses or never seeing X you will need to talk to whoever provided you that particular driver about that problem as it isn't an Ubuntu shipped driver...

Assuming you remove that driver, switch to the nv driver, reboot get into X and start restricted-manager it should mention that a driver is available. If it does not then could you post the output of the following:
grep 0391 /usr/share/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.20-16-generic/modules.alias.override/nvidia
?

It's the nvidia driver from the nvidia homepage and I had no problems with it.

I removed the driver (again), switched to nv and rebooted -> "Your hardware doesen't need any restricted drivers".

grep 0391 /usr/share/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.20-16-generic/modules.alias.override/nvidia
alias pci:v000010DEd00000391sv*sd*bc03sc*i* nvidia

I can't hide the feeling, that a new ubuntu installation will fix the whole thing...

Adding restricted-manager product to this bug. PCI ID seems to be in
/usr/share/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.20-16-generic/modules.alias.override/nvidia
lspci says the card is the following:
07:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GT] [10de:0391] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])

newur:
Don't go for that reinstall just yet. I would recommend talking to NVIDIA about that XID though.

Martin Pitt (pitti) wrote :

Thanks, Sistofe! The PCI ID should be added to l-r-m's modalias lists for nvidia. Those are shipped by l-r-m itself, not by restricted-manager.

The problem with this bug is that the PCI ID is _already_ in /usr/share/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.20-16-generic/modules.alias.override/nvidia . I can't imagine why restricted manager wouldn't be picking up on this...

Hi,
an update last week broke my beryl/compiz and I think it was a problem concerning the nvidia driver. I wasn't able to fix it so I installed a new Feisty System on my second hard disk. There wasn't any problem with r-m and my graphic card.

I can reproduce the problem (r-m still tells me that my hardware doesn't need any driver) on my old installation. But I think it's a problem caused through beta testing feisty fawn and it's not as important to waste much more time, when the final version hasn't this problem.
