planetpenguin-racer does not show text

Bug Description

Binary package hint: planetpenguin-racer

I use feisty 7.04 beta with oss ati-drivers (upgraded from 6.10). Ppracer does show, does work, but does not show text anymore, only the top lines (2 pixels high) of most texts. This is odd behaviour to me, and irritating because this way I totally depend on the picture-indications of the different courses to choose.

Same here. I did an upgrade from edgy to feisty using Update manager
(I have not tried this with a fresh install of feisty yet).

Ppracer just shows just a few faint dots of garbage where the menu text should be.

I am using a Matrox g400 video card with the mga driver.

Then I used
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
to switch to the vesa driver.

Could this be a problem in mga?
There were some mga issues in edgy.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-mga/+bug/58721

When I used the vesa driver the menu text showed normally, but without the 3d acceleration, the game is too slow to play.

Steps to reproduce with Feisty:

1. Use a Matrox g400 video card
2. Use the mga driver
3. Start ppracer
4. Observe that there is no readable menu text

(My kids love this game. Please fix.)

The Matrox g400 has worked well in the past for me
using ppracer with Debian on the same machine (AMD Sempron).

Maybe it is related to this bug, at least, it seems to me to be: I have the problem since this bug appeared, or both bugs appeared at the same time :-)

I installed the final release of Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn to a brand new HDD, then I used "sudo aptitude" to install PlanetPenguin Racer.
I am using ATI Radeon 9200SE video card with "radeon" opensource xorg driver, "glx" is enabled.

I can play with the game without problem, if I find the right place to click on with the mouse. :D

I can confirm this bug as well. Today, I updated my machine from Edgy to Feisty and instead of the text I see also only faint lines in ppracer. The video card is an ATI Radeon 8500 LE running the open source driver (ati).

I was checking my X server configuration for Feisty with the command,
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
.

When I got to the modules part "type1" was missing (I've seen "type1" in other versons).
Is the module "type1" needed for ppracer to render fonts?

I am getting the same problem in both planetpenguin-racer and stellarium (another OpenGL application). I am using an ATI Radeon RV250 If [Radeon 9000] on one machine and an RV280 [Radeon 9200] on another which also shows this problem. Maybe the bug should be reported against the radeon video driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati)?

I can confirm that both planetpenguin-racer and stellarium feature scrambled text. Graphics card: Radeon 8500 LE.

This bug seems to be a duplicate of bug #99158 (Text in (some) openGL applications is scrambled).

Ok, thanks for all your confirming reactions!
I have changed the status to confirmed, but don't know yet to whom I must assign it...

Changed in ppracer:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

Just to rule out this possibility - can those of you experiencing this problem please attach your xorg.conf file and indicate the graphic card model and monitor model you're using?

We've had reports that for some people, upgrading to Feisty results in generic monitor settings getting put into xorg.conf (see bug 3731 for example). Probably that isn't the case here, but it would be worthwhile to rule it out.
