Bug Description

There is no information in the manpage what the autoremove option does. I had to google for it to find out what it means.

apt-get's usage information also omits this argument.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This is currently indeed missing. Help with this would be very welcome!

Help would be very welcome with this. See doc/apt-get.8.xml in the apt source. Some background is here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AptAutoRemove

I'm sorry if it will sound whiny but I'm just appending my displeasure that such a visible feature (it is visible whenever I run apt-get: I get a screenfull of package to autoremove) has not been documented anywhere before a major release.

The link in the wiki is hardly useful. I would especially like to know how to DISABLE that feature or at least make it more silent.

I'm about to attach a patch that should be sufficient. I didn't modify the troff (man page) file directly, but just the docbook file.

I shouldn't have said just the docbook file. I also modified the usage instructions and a comment I noticed, in apt-get.cc.

How is a bug (with 3 duplicates) about missing documentation wishlist. All features should be documented. Anything less is a true bug.

Matthew, could you please also document how to mark a package as "wanted", so that apt will not mark it for autoremoval? I often notice packages in that list that I actually do want to keep, generally dev libraries (things that nothing specifically depends on).

Thanks.

I'm not sure about how to do that. You may be able to just "install" (apt-get install) the package, but you have also have to remove then install it manually. At any rate, even just packaging the usage update would be helpful. More bugs can follow for fuller documentation.

Daniel, I'm very sorry about this. I misunderstood the purpose of this field. I did not mean to make a mess or cause spam.

Matthew, want to create a man page for apt-mark too? :-)

Matthew Flaschen (matthew-flaschen) wrote :

Eric, there isn't a man page for apt-mark, but apt-mark --help provides useful info, which someone could easily make a man page out of. Perhaps when someone applies my patch, they'll do that too...
