Bug Description

I have downloaded the vmlinuz and initrd.gz file from the url below in order to install edgy from my hard disk.
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/edgy/main/installer-i386/20060711ubuntu15/

However, the installer couldn't mount the iso file, and when I manual mount it, the system given below errors:
mount: couldn't setup loop device.
This fault could be connected with the busybox's bug:

Yes, I got the same problem here when trying to install from a USB stick. I was already wondering why exactly the same thing did work for Dapper and not for Edgy...

I would volunteer to fix this in edgy if someone could point me in the right direction. I'm a developer but I have minimal experience with os-level hacking on linux. I can fiddle with initrd images but I don't know what was missed / broken to cause this bug.

Anyone care to give me a few clues so that I can work on a fix that works with edgy? I think it's pretty lousy to leave the "production" distro broken since the fix is available and the distributed documentation indicates that usb install is working.

This bug is frankly just ridiculous! This is the only way I can install on my computer with a USB wireless driver, and the "... ... ln /dev/loop0 /dev/loop/0" fix.

Bugs which make you unable to install your system should be fixed immediately! If you leave it much longer (than the month it's already had to fester), it will show how little Canonical gives a hoot about its users.

"...fix." -> "fix in the Ubuntu forums doesn't work."

Ninjagecko: The fix in the Ubuntu forums does work, but you need to use the alternate ISO image instead of the normal desktop one.
