Bug Description

i reporting this "bug" as many users are saying they wouldn't see the reason to have a login-manager for the livecd.

The main issue anyway is that the passwd and user name are "unknown" .. maybe the gdm | (kdm ? ) background should show it ?

Considering that many users will just click on the iso file to dwnld it, without collecting the needed infos , they will probably have problems to login

On the Ubuntu and Kubuntu live CDs, this works correctly, so the problem appears to be specific to Xubuntu.

casper knows how to configure gdm and kdm for automatic login; what does Xubuntu use?

xubuntu uses gdm. I thought asking for passwd was default in the other live CDs (which I did not test to see if this was true). I agree that autologin would make alot more sense for xubuntu too.

xubuntu uses gdm, but now i know this, it may be because of the
gdm.conf within xubuntu-default-settings pkge.

i'll check that file, in the mean time could you briefly explain me
how this is done in ubuntu ? does it use same gdm.conf as the
installed system ?

well .. .that's still the gdm.conf issue :) .. it seems.

apt-get source edubuntu-artwork

debian/gdm-cdd.conf.

* fixed gdm theme handling (using gdm-cdd.conf now)

related but not quite the same thing

edubuntu and xubuntu use /etc/gdm/gdm-cdd.conf to override default gdm settings (mostly the greeter theme). See /etc/init.d/gdm.

On the livecd the installed gdm config file is further modified to default to autologin. In a qemu xubuntu live session I am looking at, even if /etc/gdm/gdm-cdd.conf is installed, /etc/gdm/gdm.conf was touched instead by casper-bottom/autologin.
So the xubuntu theme is there but autologin is not.

xubuntu-artwork (I think) currently ships /etc/gdm/gdm-cdd.conf using alternatives which means it's a symlink. Please don't do that, make it a real file.
