Bug Description

I'm accessing my mail account through imap and an unnamed folder is displayed in the imap folders list, this folder doesn't seem to exist on the server since it doesn't show up when i'm accessing my mail account through my isp's web interface, nor is thunderbird affected by this issue. Let me know if you need some extra info please. Regards, andre

Philip Berghoff (philip-berghoff) wrote : Bug not fixed?

Hello,

I've been working for a couple of weeks now with Evolution and IMAP and I do have just the same problem with a folder showing up in my evolution list but not on the server.

This folder behaves the same way as describes above - I can't remove, move or rename it, and if I'm talking to the server directly or with any other kind of interface (Thunderbird, webmail) it doesn't show up.

In my .evolution there appears no folder without name or anything other abnormal.

I tried a couple of things after posting to a German Ubuntu-group, you can find them here:

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/134179/?highlight=

In the first entry you can read the log which is created on the server. The administrator complained about that to my. Therefore, I'd like to have the bug fixed...

Today I renamed the .evolution-folder in my /home, and when I started Evolution there was a new one created. The folder with no name appeared in both of my accounts (which have identical settings and are located on the same server).

Before that, I only saw the folder on one of my accounts - this means to me that it does not appear every time. Deleting the account and setting it up again did not change anything, though.

I hope this information helps and I will not get back on my computer before Friday night.

I'd be very happy if someone could help out - it's my first bug report and I'm curious what's gonna happen...

with best regards,

Philip

PS: I'm using Evolution 2.12.1 on a 32Bit Version of Ubuntu (7.10, Kernel 2.6.22-14-generic, Gnome 2.20.1)

I've attached a log as described above.

There is no folder as described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/37227/comments/5 .

Other mail clients do not show this problem, nor do web interfaces.

I think this issue still exists. I have noticed it on a new Hardy install. Viewing my Gmail account. There are no unnamed folders in .evolution/mail/imap/<account>/folders

I can't "uncheck" this folder via subscriptions. On another imap account, I can see another unnamed folder through the subscriptions. Luckily it's not checked.

I can confirm that I am also having this problem on a new Hardy install with imap.gmail.com . I am unable to delete the unnamed empty folder, and I cannot unsubscribe from it.

Evolution support for IMAP servers certainly seems to have got worse since Hardy. I didn't have this problem before, and am now having various problems with IMAP including being unable to view certain IMAP Folders (eg. 'All Mail' folder on imap.gmail.com - I get a 'Server Unexpectedly disconnected' error message). Whether these issues are related, I don't know.

I just tried the following:
- Deleting the empty unnamed folder (said it couldn't do it)
- Renaming the empty unnamed folder (again it wouldn't)

I then tried moving the unnamed folder from the IMAP server to my computer. When I did this, Evolution deleted all the emails in my Inbox. This is totally unacceptable. I realise that small bugs do occur in software, but this is a serious bug which causes data loss and which still hasn't been fixed, despite being reported over 2 years ago. Furthermore, I am very annoyed that Evolution deleted all my e-mails. I am therefore uninstalling Evolution and will not be reinstalling it until this bug is fixed, because at the moment it is a liability. I cannot use an e-mail client if it risks deleting all my e-mails.

The importance of this bug needs to be marked as MAJOR because it causes data loss.

The other shows it as unsubscribed, so even though it still exists for Evolution's point of view, it is not such a nuisance.

I checked the “subscription” files on server, and there is nothing unusual in either of them that would explain this (I've root access to the server).

And yes, I've this problem on my Gmail/IMAP account, too.

So a little update on the subject.

The error recreation.

When setting up a new imap account using the "Evolution Mail Configuration Assistant" (on a gmail account for me) if the checkbox "Show Only Subscribed Folders" is checked the resulting folder tree contains the notorious unnamed folder. Otherwise everything works great.

The workaround.

I had a lot of things set up, including calendar items, tasks, contacts, a lot of downloaded mail so deleting the entire configuration folder was not an option. But luckily after a lot of testing on a scrap account I found out the following. The problem goes away if one just deletes the .ev-store-summary file.

The procedure

1. Edit the problematic account.
2. Make sure the "Show Only Subscribed Folders" checkbox on Receiving Options tab is NOT checked.
3. Close Evolution.
4. Delete the file ~/.evolution/mail/imap/{your_account}/.ev-store-summary file.
5. Restart Evolution.

For me that did it.
Hell... I could even re-enable the aforementioned checkbox without a problem.

P.S. From what I figure this file contains some form of folder structure. I DON'T KNOW IF IT HAS OTHER USES.

I had the same issue (folders with no name which couldn't be removed) on Evolution 2.28.3 on Lucid Lynx.

Backed up my .evolution folder then deleted .evolution/mail/mapi/myaccount folder and restarted Evolution. Took a couple of minutes to rebuild inbox and other folders from exchange but problem is resolved. Empty mail folders no longer appear.
