failed install

Asked by dcjohan

We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file a bug report at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug and a developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible. To help the developers understand what went wrong, include the following detail in your bug report, and attach the files /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 130, in ?
    install(sys.argv[1])
  File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 55, in install
    ret = wizard.run()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 264, in run
    self.progress_loop()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 538, in progress_loop
    raise RuntimeError, ("Install failed with exit code %s; see "
RuntimeError: Install failed with exit code 1; see /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/syslog

O.K., how do I do EXACTLY what is asked. I've been looking all over launchpad for the past 30 minutes but I don't see how to accomplish what is being asked. I'm ready top participate but don't know what to do.

I have a similar problem, only with me, I'm getting a "CD failed to boot" error right from the get go. I ran the md5sum tester on the image file that I downloaded, and it said that the image was okay, so it must be some other problem. What should I do?

b2tharizzo, that doesn't really sound like a similar problem to be honest.

dcjohan, Try the live cd installer again and when it crashes visit the URL you gave above, and copy and paste the traceback into the comment, then press "submit bug report".

This will submit the bug report and take you to the bugs page.

At the top left of the page there is a bunch of "actions" you can do.

Hit "add attachment" then press "browse" and press "file system" on the left hand side, then scroll through to find the files listed above.

Find the first file, select it and press open.

Give the file a comment such as " the requested /var/log/installer/syslog" for example. then press add.

Repeat the steps from "add attachment" downwards until you've uploaded all the files asked for.

If that's not clear enough feel free to ask for further clarification.

guillaumme, That "same error" could in fact be quite different, so could you do the steps above that I told dcjohan about above in your own bug report?

It's probably not the same error. The only way you can tell is via the /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/partman and /var/log/syslog files.

A seperate bug needs to be filed for each computer this happens too.

dcjohan: I'd advise you close this support ticket else you'll only get more and more emails coming from it.

O.K., now I'm totally confused. If I close it, isn't that the same as
saying it's no longer a concern or issue, or does closing it imply
something else? Please explain as I thought that by opening this it
would be something that was attended to and that I might even be asked
to participate in some manner, like try this code or something like
that. =-O

This is a support ticket, you can keep it open as long as you like but problems status/fixes are done by developers monitoring bugs rather than support requests.

If you leave it open people will keep seeing it and thinking they have the same issue will probably write a message saying "hey, me too", which gives you an email each time and doesn't solve anything.

If that doesn't bother you then fair enough, leave it open :)

As the error message says you should visit https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug to file a graphical installer bug, and you should also attach the three files it requests. Then the developer can diagnose the problem, and fix it. Perhaps asking for some participation along the way.

You're not the first person to be confused by launchpad :)

Dean -

    I thought that was exactly what I had done; so please enlighten me a
bit. When I click on the link you provided, I see the same thing I did -
or it sure appears that way - when I filed the report to which you are
making reference. Si I guess I'm TOTALLY confused at this point. I'd
like to help but I don't apparently understand how to properly navigate
and then use the system.

The page you entered this on was https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+addticket The way things happen is that a ticket is filed then people try to help the user with the problem. If the problem appears to be a bug then a bug report is made (in the graphical-installer case via https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug

Checking back on your history I can see that you did indeed correctly make a bug report (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/52413) on the same day as you made this support ticket (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+ticket/1165).

You should keep the bug report open as this is where the issue will be eventually resolved once a developer has had chance to verify your bug report.

However I'm replying to you through the ticket that you opened, which I don't think serves any purpose at present :).

Can you help with this problem?
