What happens if you run open office from the terminal? Do you get any output, if so paste it here.

My KDE, without SCIM I think, is unaffected though

My KDE is with SCIM, and can work with OpenOffice... Is this then a GNOME error?

Similar problem. Unset GTK_IM_MODULE and it works, but it's a shame I cannot input Chinese into OpenOffice.

May I also add that, um, the stock OpenOffice.org does not work either. This has probably got something to do with GTK in Ubuntu and how it interacts with (the ubuntu-ized or otherwise) OpenOffice.

The IM module setting in Ubuntu scim packages is quite problematic. Try set GTK_IM_MODULE to "xim" and see if things work.

See the document /usr/share/doc/scim/README.GTK for the technical details.
