Entertainer 0.5 Released

Written for Entertainer Media Center by Matt Layman on 2010-04-11

The Entertainer developers are proud to announce the release of Entertainer 0.5, Boreas [1]. Some highlights of new things in 0.5 include:

 * All widgets in the interface are now mouse/touchscreen enabled. The interface still requires the keyboard for some important operations (like returning to a previous screen), but the groundwork was laid to get Entertainer working on tablet style devices.
 * A consolidated setup interface. Preferences and content are now managed in a single setup application. The new setup is available in `entertainer-manager`.
 * Upgraded the code to be compatible with the clutter 1.0 series. Since the clutter team has made a commitment to be API compatible for the 1.0 series, the development team should not have to make all the changes that have been required as clutter has been maturing.

Please remember that Entertainer is still considered alpha software. Any help from the community will be appreciated. Please come join us on the mailing list [2] or our IRC channel (#entertainer) on the Freenode network (irc.freenode.net). We would love to help you get involved.

You can download the source tarball from our downloads page [3] or wait for a little while until the team can build a PPA for 0.5 to enable downloading from the package manager.

Entertainer 0.4 released!

Written for Entertainer Media Center by Matt Layman on 2009-04-06

At long last, the Entertainer developers are proud to announce that Entertainer 0.4, Apollo, is out the door. Apollo represents the beginning of our series of Greek god inspired code names.

And what is a more fitting name than the Greek god of healing!? The developers have been working hard to clean things up under the hood, so if you take a look at the 50 released bugs [1], you can see lots of TODOs and FIXMEs that were strewn about in the code have been rubbed out.

Since we're cleaning house, there still aren't a lot of features that the every day user might notice, but here are some highlights of new things in 0.4:

- Full screen mode now plays nicely on Entertainer. Since full screen is the new default behavior, those of you on screens smaller than 1366 by 768 will no longer have to figure out how to make Entertainer fit on your screen.
- Translators keep on rockin'. Entertainer has full support for 7 languages with partial support for many others. We have also joined the Launchpad Translators team so that the quality of our translations will improve as people from an experienced team review the work of our volunteers.

Since we are small team, we have learned that it simply won't be feasible to do a monthly release like we declared in our last release announcement. We are aiming, however, for a bi-monthly release schedule. There are some pretty exciting features that we are preparing so keep testing and letting those bug reports role in.

Please remember that Entertainer is still considered alpha software. Any help from the community will be appreciated. Please come join us on the mailing list [2] or our IRC channel (#entertainer) on the Freenode network (irc.freenode.net). We would love to help you get involved.

You can download the source tarball from our downloads page [3] or wait for a little while until Launchpad can finish building the 0.4 release in the Entertainer Release Team PPA.

Entertainer 0.3 Released

Written for Entertainer Media Center by Paul Hummer on 2009-01-07

After much blood, sweat, and tears (more than any developers cares to admit), Entertainer 0.3 Turku has been released! Turku is the hometown of Entertainer's original developer, Lauri Taimila.

Wait?! You say we can't count? You say we skipped a 0.2 release? No, there is a 0.2 tarball that is available, but due to the release of Intrepid Ibex, 0.2 was a still born release due to its incompatibility with the current stable version of clutter. 0.3 is compatible with clutter 0.8

Notable changes in this release are:

  - Significant memory reduction due to large changes in the presentation code.
  - The backend no longer re-indexes media on every startup (safe for solid state drives!)
  - Full translations in French and Spanish, and partial translations in many other languages
  - Entertainer is no longer dependent on the pyinotify library

This release marks a turning point for Entertainer development. Entertainer releases will now be monthly releases, so bugs will have a quicker turnaround from filed, to fixed, to released! Thanks goes to all the Entertainer developers for working so hard on this release!

Minor bugs that affect the release will be fixed, and then an official release will be made available in tarball and package format.
