qemu-system-x86_64 -m 2G -kernel ./boot-kernel -initrd ./boot-initrd -append break=bottom -nic user,model=virtio-net-pci

using boot-initrd & boot-kernel from the stream, and using the above command, i do get virtio-net loaded and usable.
