Melange is a 3D lattice-particle model.
Its key features include elastic isotropy, volume conservative visco-elasticity, freely selectable macroscopic elastic properties and dynamic fracture formation.
'Melange' was initially intended to be a model for large scale tectonic processes in the earth's crust, which involve brittle and ductile processes. It is, however, capable to model processes on the micro and on the medium scale as well.
If you want to install 'Melange', it is recommended to download and read the INSTALL file from the download section before doing anything else. This will tell you if you can install from the deb-file (simple) or if you need to install from source (also not very complicated). Then download the documentation package to get started with using it.
Technically, 'Melange' is a shared library, written in C++. It is controlled via a built-in Python-API, so its functions can be called from a Python script or even an interactive Python shell.
In theory 'Melange' is cross platform. 'In theory', because we developed and tested it on Linux (Ubuntu) only. The dependencies, the compiler, the build system and the viewer it uses exist all on Linux, Windows and Mac. It should be no big deal for someone accustomed to these platforms to recompile the program.
