MetaCast is an XML format used to store and transmit metadata of a webcasted video.

metacast is also the name of a Python module to manipulate this kind of file for Python apps

Since the version 2.0, it is possible to manage metadata through a relational database. Thus, the XML format become only necessary for import/export operations, while the local persistence is now provided by the database. (SQL specs coming soon...)
