Smoke Test is a simple (and probably wildly inaccurate) benchmarking application that tests a system's speed: that is, it tests how fast an application runs on a certain operating system on certain hardware. It is licensed under a BSD-style license and is (loosely) based on a previous, similar application called "Seat Graffiti".
The idea behind Smoke Test is to use 'true' benchmarks, but to use them in real-world environments. For example, if a CPU test is running on a dedicated system running from a live CD, it's not going to be an accurate representation of how much CPU time is available when you have, say, an X server and several apps running at the same time, with all the background services chugging away.
