Try Logging out of Facebook from your browser and then log in using your user name instead of your email address.

I had this problem until I logged in using my user name instead of email address (enter your user name where it asks for email address.) Logging in like this corrected the problem for me.

I believe this bug is a problem with Facebook and not Empathy. Can anyone confirm that the same problem and occurs with Pidgin or other Jabber clients.
