I just noticed the tda1004x firmwares are not downloadable from linuxtv.org anymore for whatever reason. As an ex-Mandriva user I know that Penguin Liberation Front maintains various up-to-date firmware packages from where the files could be extracted. There are also loads of firmware for download here: http://www.geexbox.org/firmwares/
It should really be easy to add them to linux-restricted-modules in Hardy and after some testing provide a backported package for Gutsy.
