I have installed the newer Kubuntu and the ati driver is working with it. However the display is 2/3's of an inch left and a 1/3 of an inch down.

version number is 1.6.29.99+git20090825.fc74e119-0

I'm assuming therefore that this might be due to a usplash/xsplash/metacity... all fighting for the same display, of course I could be horrifically wrong.
