Hi everybody,

I was looking for this bug report before reporting the same issue.
I definitly think that in Dapper, there is an conflict between gtk apps and kde (maybe qt, but I don't really know, I'm not a developper). That's why I think this bug is linked with that one I had already reported https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-artwork/+bug/36046

You had (developpers team) classified as an minor issue, but I think it should be seen as a major issue (I say why further). And this present bug reported by wra is the perfect example. He is (maybe) a new linux user who first installed kubuntu, but he's heard about other desktop environments (gnome and xfce) and wants to try them.

What will this user say... "it just does not work, or not correctly (in the same bug report, I had added a comment about openoffice's icons which disappear in gnome when kubuntu and ubuntu -desktops are installed together).

The normal user won't think or know that it is an issue due to the fact that kubuntu-destop is installed on the same system. Does he have to know that he shouldn't have several "desktops" (ubuntu-desktop, etc.) installed on the same system ?
Nevertheless, everywhere (on ubuntu's website, kubuntu's website, etc.), it is written that you can swicth easily from kubuntu to ubuntu or xubuntu by installing the corresponding [...]-desktop metapackage. So, what's the matter ? How does the new linux user have to deal with this problem ? Does he have to uninstall all the kde environment ? How ? Reinstall the whole system ? That's why I think that it should be classified as a major issue.

Mark Shuttleworth wrote (a comment in the bug I had reported) : "I'm sure the problem comes from having both ubuntu and Kubuntu desktop metapackages installed, which means you are running an interesting mix of the two different platforms. This is a highly unusual configuration, and at this
stage I don't think we can devote resources to tracking it down.".
"Highly unusual configuration" yet, it is written on this page http://www.kubuntu.org/docs/about-kubuntu/C/index.html (at the end) that "To install Kubuntu you just need to install the kubuntu-desktop package". Is it going to work differently with Dapper ?

I know that you all (developpers) have a lot of work and I would help you if I could code, but I think all that is contradictory.

So, I have tested several things, on the same computer (mine) :

First, the same thing that is described in this bug report.

Second, I tried the xubuntu (beta 2) live CD (so, this means xfce alone, of course), it works fine.

Third, I have installed ubuntu on an external hdd (I felt like testing this new fonctionnality... great ! lol !) and I wanted to check whether or not it would work well with just ubuntu-desktop and xubuntu-destop (I already had an idea...) and it works fine.

So, this is all about those issues. I hope you (developpers) are going to have "the will" (and enough time, of course) to fix this.

Thank you all for your great work !

Vincent
