I found a solution for my problem:

In the initial installation of ubuntu one client, the shared folder was created in c:\XXXXXXX\Ubuntu One (The folder name and contents is under NDA so I cannot disclose them). I don't know why because I am pretty sure I wouldn't install it there if a was given an option. The client placed the shared folder on the same place when I installed it on a XP VM.

The problem in question (which was not encountered in the VM) started when I renamed the folder to something else. I now renamed it back and the client works ok.

In my point of view, even now that I fixed the client, there is still a bug in the client as I surely don't want it to be in that directory. Can't it be installed in the user directory or documents directory?

(note: my original bug report was Bug #880511 in case you need any further information)
