The Underweb is an alternative to the WWW. It is a new multimedia communications framework that aims to bring more user-elegance to electronic communication spaces. Using a new system of interactive and interlinked application documents, the Underweb provides users of digital media an accessible way to not only read and consume content, but also to write, edit and publish content without the need for centralized third-party systems. It places the means of production into the hands of the users. Additionally, it forgoes the current broken, partially-open, and excessive ad-hoc method of standardization in favor of the more robust and flexible standardization approach that can be found in free software development where the source code IS the standard.
