As a graduate student working in Remote Sensing and GIS, the computer is an invaluable research instrument to me at school. At home, I also use it for personal research and some of my work as an activist.

I entered the Linux world in December of 2006 when I XP killed my computer one time too many and I decided to try Ubuntu. I have since turned my laptop into an Ubuntu machine as well. I started with virtually no knowledge of the Linux or the shell, and minimal technical expertise. Learning to interact with Linux and the Ubuntu environment has often felt like re-learning how to use a computer, but I consider the knowledge gained worthwhile. I also believe that I am learning to understand computing concepts a great deal more thoroughly than I did before, although nowhere near a level that I would consider 'Advanced'.
