Members of this group have access to UbuntuOne/Launchpad's HOTP and TOTP (either HMAC-based or time-based one-time password) two-factor authentication implementations. Care should be taken in adding members, as loss of all synchronization seeds or hardware tokens would render those accounts permanently inaccessible.

Membership for this group is managed by the OpenDev Systems Administrators, to aid users in securing their authentication to some OpenDev Collaboratory services. Any users of those services are welcome to request membership, and will be approved at the earliest opportunity.

Keep this in mind:

Once your group membership is enabled you will be prompted to add a primary device (any device or application which supports the OATH 2 protocol, for example a phone with Google authenticator will work) which will be required when you log into login.ubuntu.com, Launchpad or other related services.

Once you've done this, please create a set of backup codes: go to "Authentication devices", add a new device, select 'Paper backup codes', print the resulting list of codes and store the paper in a safe place that you won't forget.

It's mandatory to have backup codes because if you lose your 2fa device, (for example if you reinstall or replace your phone, you will lose the Google Authenticator configuration) then you will not be able to login to Ubuntu One without backup codes. If you don't have your backup codes to use in that situation, you WILL be locked out forever.

Let me repeat that. If you lose, change or reset your 2fa device and don't have backup codes, you WILL be locked out FOREVER.

If that happens, we can NOT help you recover the account. You will have to create a new one.

If you lose your backup codes, there is no "lesson learned, I'll keep it in mind for next time" - you WILL be irretrievably locked out and will have to create a new account.
