Auto-configuration of X to the DPI of your display is not always possible. A default of 96 DPI does not really help. When you get tens if not hundreds of points off your correct DPI the display takes on a comic character. At the very least a user should be notified that their DPI has been set to a fallback and be given the option to measure their display.
