Bug Description

As per the title, we should introduce NVIDIA's 331.x driver in 14.04.

Here's a list of the source packages we should introduce and of the archive sections they belong to:

nvidia-graphics-drivers-331 (section: "restricted")
nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates (section: "restricted")
nvidia-settings-331 (section: "main")
nvidia-settings-331-updates (section: "main")

Also, please include "nvidia persistenced" (see bug #1246735)

Note: the two drivers have transitional packages for nvidia-319 and nvidia-319-updates. The nvidia-settings packages do the same with nvidia-settings-319 and nvidia-settings-319-updates.

The packages are waiting for approval in trusty-proposed (NEW)

Can we also backport 331.20 to 13.10 / Saucy? The current nvidia drivers in Saucy don't support the 3.11 kernel, and there are gobs of issues.

@Aaron: what drivers exactly don't support 3.11? I patched 319 myself to get it to work with 3.11.

@Alberto: The stock 319.60 from Saucy nvidia-319-updates. While power users can patch, I think we need a repository update for everyone else.

319.72 includes the 3.11 fix, and it's in Debian unstable:
http://packages.qa.debian.org/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers/news/20131109T134942Z.html

However, it might make more sense to update to the 331 branch since it's now the "current long-lived branch" from nvidia, and 331.20 has the 3.11 fix:

nvidia-319-updates has been compatible with 3.11 since the 319.49-0ubuntu2 release in Saucy (and we're at 319.60-0ubuntu1 now). If it doesn't compile, then it's probably a bug free to file a bug report about it. It's not compatible with 3.12 though.

I've just tried to install the package in a clean environment (a Saucy chroot) and it build against 3.11:

Building for architecture x86_64
Building initial module for 3.11.0-12-generic
Done.

nvidia_319_updates:
Running module version sanity check.
 - Original module
   - No original module exists within this kernel
 - Installation
   - Installing to /lib/modules/3.11.0-12-generic/updates/dkms/

depmod....

DKMS: install completed.

319.49-0ubuntu2 pre-dates the following issue with the 3.11 kernel:
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/628864/unix-graphics-announcements-and-news/num_physpages-and-support-for-3-11-and-later-kernels
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTUwMTk

Nvidia provided a hotfix patch for 319.60, and fixed the issue in the 319.72 (http://ftp-master.metadata.debian.org/changelogs/non-free/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers/unstable_changelog) and 331.20 releases (http://packages.qa.debian.org/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers/news/20131108T193429Z.html).

To my knowledge, this issue doesn't prevent a build of the kernel module. Sorry for the confusion.

To clarify, my request is that either 319.72 (bug fix) or 331.20 (current long-lived branch with shiny features) be pushed to Saucy, so that users don't have to apply the hotfix patch and deviate from the repository. I have an AMD64 system with a GeForce GT 610 that has been highly unstable since upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10, and the most likely culprit I can find is the nvidia binary driver.

Thanks for the replies. :)

I can definitely update the 319-updates package to 331 in Saucy and maybe add the hotfix to the 319 package.

FYI, I installed 331.20 from the ubuntu-x-swat Saucy PPA, and it resolved the issues I was having.
