Just had this crash. Apport went to file the bug and Launchpad saw this identical bug. Just wanted to state that this affected me as well. Thanks for setting it as critical.

As i mentioned in 1285687, It does also happens in SMPlayer but not in Totem.

i need to add that it also crashes when you start openshot for some reason

Yep, I was having this issue when opening OpenShot. Crashed literally every
day time.

the more i see the problem the more i notice that it has to do with libav
for some reason....

When Overlay is deactivated in VLC, the problem is worked around.
This could be a temporary solution to see videos.

Using mpv is a better solution and is lighter with better video quality than vlc

In vlc, setting the video output (in preferences) to x11 (XCB) works fine.

You also need to be able to start vlc

Can't tell if trolling because nothing is stopping you from opening VLC and disabling overlay video for the time being. Stop trying to open it with a video and you wouldn't have it crashing your X while trying to fix the problem.

I actually didn't even thing of that, I totally forgot that I can do it!

BTW what is triaged?

For me this bug causes Skype to crash X (mentioned in linked bug 1286039). System worked fine on 13.04 and 13.10 (over-eager upgrade to 14.04 to get 5.1 HDMI sound working!).

This can be worked around by unplugging the USB webcam and then changing the Skype settings to not use a camera - then the webcam can be safely reattached. I guess this would be more difficult for someone with a built in webcam.

Obviously this workaround does nothing to alleviate the earache I am getting from my mother-in-law about no longer being able to see her grandson, so if there is any further information I can provide to help with fixing this, please let me know!

I can confirm that on my 14.04 install, fglrx-updates 2:13.350.1-0ubuntu1 has resolved the issue in Skype.
