Bug Description

After upgrading to wily, I started to get regular random Xorg crash (and so, session restarting and such). This can happen multiple times a day. I've retried installing the latest intel driver from the xorg-edgers ppa as Timo recommended, but the crash is still there.

Attached the stacktrace in gdb.txt

Hi,

As of today this started happening to me too, intervals of hours or minutes.
I'm on Kubuntu 15.04, also running xorg-edgers. My hardware is a Surface Pro 3 i5-5300 (Intel GPU). I'd be happy to supply any logfile that would come in handy.

Not sure if I agree with the 'no big deal'. A crash is one thing, a crash that takes a complete session down instantly seems like a bit of a (critical) deal breaker, no?
Also, since yesterday my symptoms have changed, now X crashes and the screen just stays black. Interval went from hourly to twice in about 10 hours. I can CTRL-ALT to a text mode terminal, so the OS is still running. I noticed yesterday there were some intel video driver updates, not sure if those had an influence on this.

Hi all,

The exact same thing started bugging me as well. A handful of data:
Kubuntu 15.10, intel gpu, xserver-xorg-video-intel == 2:2.99.917-1ubuntu1.
Will it do any good to post my logs?

I don't know about the others, but the last couple of days no crashes like these. For me it seems the latest (Intel?) updates seem to have fixed the issue.

I was thinking the same, until yesterday evening, still got the same crash while putting some youtube video fullscreen.

I'm wondering if that's not something to do with Chrome sending some GPU data that the intel card doesn't like. Do you use chrome/chromium as well?

a test build with debugging turned on is at

https://launchpad.net/~tjaalton/+archive/ubuntu/test

install -dbg too, and try to reproduce, if it still crashes, compress /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old which should have the trace and attach here

I installed the test build the other day and no crash thus far. @Timo, does this build contain any actual fixes or am I just being lucky?
I gave up on putting up with xorg frantically logging to Xorg.0.log after the file exceeded 5GB so I guess I'd rather not rely on my luck...

it's from git master so newer than what wily has.

If anything was hoped to have been fixed with the master branch version of the xserver-xorg-video-intel, well, then, it does nothing to address this crash. And I got no logs to show.
Is there any way to throttle the log output to a level that would both prevent excessive disk usage and preserve the most vital debug info at the same time?

That crash series has appeared some times ago with :
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1424199

usually there is a gnome-shell crash and auto restart; but sometimes the whole session crash

On my system, i have two cases, both running gnome-shell (no ppa or external package):
- a fresh Wily i386 from mini.iso (a week ago or so): does not get crash
- a vivid to wily upgrade, with quite the same config/apps:
   a) get often daily crashes, sometime the whole session
   b) hardly suspect a lib (both used on ubu & kubu as reported into a post above)
   c) i can get crash 'on demand' when i made some on/off switches about extensions.gnome.org addons (both online or with tweak tool)

==> the first crash happening is as reported into lp:1424199, then there is a possible cascade crashes

note: i'm using nvidia-355 and have no discrete gpu, so reporting against xserver-video-intel seems not the root cause.
note2: as it happens widely, a language (gcc, python, javascript) might be a better candidate

Switching tabs or opening a new one will sometimes cause a full crash. I have tried chrome stable and dev channels. Not long upgraded to dev channel, but still having crashes. Happy to provide any further information or logs.

The crash is caused by the update of x11proto-core-dev to 7.0.28, and xserver built against it. I'll revert the offending commit from the proto and rebuild the server.

Yesterday libglib2.0 2.45.7-1 has been upgraded, and there is crash since that upgrade.
Cant says if it matter or if its pure coincidence.

I'm also having this issue regularly, at least two times a day. I can't say for sure but it seems that opening/closing tabs in Chrome is what triggers a crash most frequently here.

This bug used to happen to me too in 15.10. Now I am using 16.04 and it is very stable (never happen in 16.04 so far). However, today I was installing IBM SPSS 14-week trial version and x-org crashed. (The bug report was sent automatically). X-org was crashing every time I tried to install SPSS. Then I found on forum that "libstdc++5" should be installed and after installation of it, I was able to finish the installation. However, I believe x-org should not crash because of these issues?
