Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

When trying to install the Gutsy live-cd to the hard-drive, i get Errno 5: Input/output error, and the installer exits, leaving me with an unusable HD.

This is probably a faulty CD. Nevertheless, the application should give the user a chance to clean the CD from dust or replace it, rather then just exiting with that errornumber.

I should also mention that the "check CD for errors" option on the boot menu of Gutsy did not find any errors.

A try again button would not help much. A faulty CD is going to remain faulty between runs. Did the installer display that error to you before exiting, or did you have to grep through the logs to find it?

Sometimes a "faulty CD" is just a CD with little dust on it. From my experience, Many times cleaning the CD and trying again helped.

And it did show the error before exiting.

Cleaning the CD requires being able to eject it; you typically can't eject it without rebooting the computer, since the kernel considers the drive locked while the system is running off the live CD ...

Are you still sure that this is worthwhile? I suspect it would be a placebo at best.

It's perhaps worth noting that (IIRC) the kernel has usually already tried again several times before giving up and returning an input/output error.

So the kernel shouldn't lock the drive, or unlock it and wait for the
user to reinsert it after cleaning. It happened to me numerous times
before, with data cds, music cd and even dvds. Cleaning the drive's
"laser eye" prevent errors when reading/writing. Retrying with the same
dust balls in the drive won't help. IMHO Ubiquity should even _suggest_
cleaning the drive, and then retry.

And I can't see any different factors that could cause my error
described above.

Thanks.
