Bug Description

Ubuntu Online Accounts is no longer maintained. There is an alternative, GNOME Online Accounts for the GNOME desktop.

Also, Unity's Online Accounts settings panel does not currently work without oxide-qt but oxide-qt will be removed from Ubuntu 17.10.

Will these be available on universe? Because many little applications still depends on them? Shotwell works with UOA and flickr. Same for empathy. Removal of UOA basically means removal of Unity7.

Shotwell was stuck on an old git snapshot for over a year (LP: #1581180) because the UOA support was unmaintained and no one had the time or ability to forward-port that support. That support has now been removed and we'll finally get a supportable version of Shotwell in Ubuntu 17.10.

Empathy's UOA support was dropped about two months ago from 17.10.

Full removal of UOA means removal of Unity8. It does not mean removal of Unity 7. The online support for some of the dash "lenses" has already been removed as part of this effort.

This request is about removal, not demotion to universe.

Thanks Jeremy.

I like to mention that library for single signon, libaccounts-glib (and libaccounts-glib-tools) provides a non gui method to get authentication token from Google/Facebook on headless server. It is the only way to add a google account without GUI.I am not sure if gnome-online-accounts provides such command line tools. This is really unfortunate.

As far as I can see, there is no plan to remove these packages (please confirm, Jeremy). And indeed I'm going to maintain these packages in the future as well:
  libsignon-{qt,glib}, signond, libaccounts-{qt,glib}

I'm also willing to maintain other packages mentioned in this bug, such as online-accounts-api and ubuntu-system-settings-online-accounts, but since these are effectively used only on the phone, I'll be maintaining them as part of the ubports project and I have no objection on removing them from the archive.

libaccounts-glib, libsignon-glib, signon, signon-plugin-oauth, signon-plugin-password, telepathy-accounts-glib (and a few more with more obvious K sounding names) are being kept because they are used in KDE Plasma.

Khurshid, is that sufficient for what you need? Or do you also need account-plugins?

Mardy, I don't think there's a problem with ubports maintained stuff re-entering Ubuntu if it's maintained. It looks to me like ubports is currently focused on Xenial and PPAs which is a good approach too.

The list of Unity8 related removals is much longer (see xnox's estimate in his merge proposal). This bug focuses on UOA stuff which does end up including Unity8 too.

My understanding is that the Ubuntu Desktop team agreed a few months ago to drop UOA.

We dropped UOA support from Empathy, Evolution Data Server, Shotwell, and the Unity lenses.

right, we try to keep unity7 working as best as possible but we can't hold on other work or keep unmaintained components in the archive because of it so it's accepted that some features are going to be missing in the new version

I believe we talked about keeping account-plugins in the repo for artful cycle, so that apps which uses signon libraries can still use it while porting away to something else. ?

@Khurshid: If the stuff is deprecated and unmaintained, we have to remove it. Otherwise we get stuck and cannot move forward and upgrade other parts of the stack, like Qt in this case.

If you are interested in keeping this stuff alive, nothing prevents you from creating a PPA and keeping these packages there.

I asked the debian maintainer to create a transitional package of qtdeclarative5-gsettings1.0
