I can confirm this bug in FileRoller v2.20.1, which is the current version for Gutsy. The bugzilla report says that this was fixed for version 2.9 (way back when). This is a minor annoyance, but I don't know why it is still around.

This is due to Nautilus not supporting the XDS protocol for list view. It will be fixed once the patch at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171655 is merged.

It really is time to fix this one. This is one of the basic usability features a today's os requires. I would do it myself, but I am still in the process of learning... to bad.

I applied the patch by Amos Brocco from gnome bugzilla (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171655) and created a package for hardy and it works.
If anyone is interested in testing just add "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/gbordiga/ubuntu hardy main" to sources.list and update/grade.

The same patch is also found in Fedora 10 (rawhide) nautilus package.

Will ever the maintainer apply the patch to official ubuntu package?

To the best of my knowledge, Nautilus upstream has been mostly inactive on the bug tracker recently, and request that patches be sent to the mailing list. The patch seems unreviewed so far [1] despite the author having sent it to the Nautilus mailing list upon request [2], but as mentioned, is considered for inclusion in 2.24.

I think the best course of action would be to keep an eye on the Nautilus commits, bug activity and mailing list thread until critical time for inclusion in 2.24 (within the next few weeks), and gently poke the upstream maintainers for inclusion with test results if things don't seem to be moving.

Candle, you're welcome to send a patch if you want this to be fixed asap otherwise adding those kind of comments doesn't help at all to get this fixed.

There already is a working patch at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171655#c39 as reported above. It just hasn't been applied for some reason.

Ok, the patch was sent to the mailing list by Amos Brocco (Thanks Amos!) on March 18, 2008. However, it was never commented on, and I think it got lost in the shuffle. Does anyone want to bump the patch and ask for comments again?

Is this a duplicate of bug #61237 (or vice versa), and if not, what is different?

Revision history for this message
Oliver Gerlich (ogerlich) wrote :

Mike: it looks like bug #61237 is about a "design problem" in Nautilus, namely that if you drag files into a list view window where only folders are visible, the file will always be dropped into one of those folders. On the other hand, this bug here is about a real "missing feature", namely that you can't drag and drop files from file-roller into _any_ list view in Nautilus (apparently it's simply not implemented).

That's how I understand these two bugs, and so I'd say they are different. They also have different bug reports upstream, which go into more detail about the problems.

How come this is a "low importance" bug?
A patch has been availaible for several releases, comparable functionality is available in KDE, Windows and Mac OS.
It is simply a feature that users expect to be there, and a must have functionality for new Gnome users.

"mostly" meaning it now works on directories, but not sub-directories. fix not yet released.

Right. But should we wait another four years before it's finally fixed? (the Bug in Gnome's Bugzilla was reported 2005-03-25)

IMO that it works on directories improves the situation a lot.

I'm very sorry to say that this bug is still present in:

- Nautilus 2.26.2, Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope
- Nautilus 2.28.0, Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala - Beta Release

Please, solve this problem as soon as possible, because listview mode in Nautilus is almost unusable because of this limitation.
It seems that there is a fix for this bug, why the solution have not been included definitly in the project?

Thank you!

What does not work?
I can drag files from file roller just file to nautilus list mode (Ubuntu 9.04).

Revision history for this message
wribeiro (wribeiro) wrote :

Jakob, the problem occours when you try to copy & paste files to/from clipboard

Please, follow the steps:
 1. Start Nautilus, right click a file in any folder, select "copy"
 2. Open another folder containing many subfolders, more than can be shown at a time
 3. Select list view mode - ensure that vertical scroll bar is visible
 4. Right-click any point in background area of the folder (white space) to select the "paste" command
Here the bug occours:
 5. A file or a subfolder is selected (hi-lighted) by the right click and the context menu don't show "paste" option

The correct behavior should be:
 5. The subfoder is not selected and the context menu show "paste" option

In resume:
When showing the contents of a folder in listview mode, Nautilus don't let any background available for right-clik, different from iconview, where background is "right-clickable". In the same way, we can't create a new subfolder or a new file do the folder.
KDE (Dolphin) and Windows (Explorer) have different solutions for the problem, but in both cases it works.
But in Nautilus it does not work.

Thank you!
