Bug Description

Ubuntu Hardy alpha 3; Ubuntu Hardy beta

1. Connect an iPod or a USB camera.

What happens: Nothing, for about seven seconds. (Then the device appears on the desktop.)

What should happen: Within about two seconds, some sort of progress feedback should appear, for example a progress window.

This might currently be very tricky to implement, since the kernel just takes a while to read the file system information. At least you won't get a dead nautilus window, it only appears when the device has been completely detected (at least on my box).

So perhaps the kernel could (or maybe it does already) issue a message that means "I've detected a new device but I don't know what it is yet", and Nautilus could translate this into a progress window (even if its progress bar was an indeterminate one).

Is this still a problem in Intrepid with the latest kernel?

Is anyone still having this on a supported release? It doesn't seem to take very long at all for me.
