Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde-window-manager

The cube cap image is not installed to /usr/share/kde4/apps/kwin/

It is called cubecap.png and is situated in kdebase/workspace/kwin/effects/data

Please add it. Btw I would recommend you to use a kubuntu logo instead of the KDE logo. But it should be in a good resolution or it will not look nice on higher resolutions. In fact I thought of the cube cap image as a place for branding.

I am wondering if an SVG wouldn't make more sense.

Well I thought about it and decided: no. In the effect I need it as a GLTexture. Converting pngs or jpegs to textures is quite easy. Converting svgs would be much more complicated. As the texture is generated when the cube is opened for the first time I feared that generating a texture from svg would take too much time resulting in just a black, not responding screen. The advantages of svg is not so important in that case as you never know the exact sice of the caps (you can zoom the cube).

We could probably only solve this by putting a branding png in kubuntu-default-settings (since we have control of the upstream tarball, hehe) and installing it from there.

Sounds sensible, just ensure it doesn't look half bad on very small and very big display resolutions.

Un-milestoning since we removed the cube patch from Intrepid due to painting regressions.
We can still address this in Jaunty though. :-)

This bug is still alive in Intrepid final with updates (Nov 5)

True. If Intrepid final had the cube it would be still very valid.. :P

Anyway.

Martin, are there plans to have a setting for the cube cap in 4.2.x? Would make branding via kubuntu-default-settings a lot easier.

What would help you best? Currently the image is installed by package kde-window-manager to /usr/share/kde4/apps/kwin/cubecap.png. So you just need to replace it. If you need a better way please tell me and I will add it as long as it does not require any new strings ;-)

Best would be to have a setting in kwinrc to change the cube cap path. That way we can deploy the Kubuntu branded image + setting via kubuntu-default-settings and if this package is not installed one gets the KDE cubecap.

Just added the option "CapPath" to kwinrc. So you can already brand the rc ;-)

Thank you very much :)
Kubuntu cube cap committed to kubuntu-default-settings development branch.

Just looked at your cube cap and I have one more hint: you should also change the cube cap color to the same black as in the image. It's the setting "CapColor". The cap color is needed if the cube is bigger than four desktops. The image is in the center and the remaining space is filled with the cap color. So having the same colour will look nice.

This bug was fixed in the package kubuntu-default-settings - 1:9.04.2

---------------
kubuntu-default-settings (1:9.04.2) jaunty; urgency=low

  [ Harald Sitter ]
  * Add cubecap.png for cube branding (LP: #278105)
  * Set cap color in kwinrc, as suggested by Martin Gräßlin
  * Change kickoffrc to use Amarok 2 (KDE 4)
  * Convert plasma's branding.svg to branding.svgz (KDE 4.2 expects a .svgz)

  [ Anthony Mercatante ]
  * Added kopeterc file, enabling tabs by default for the chat window.
